Eco Hazards in Plastics & Pet Poop

South Africans use between 30 and 50kg of plastic bags per year. If the landfills are not using proper waste management, or if there is an overflowing of landfills, the waste, especially plastic, eventually ends up in rivers and the ocean. An estimated 8 million metric tons of discarded plastic ends up in the ocean!

According to the Natural Environment website, it takes at least 400 years for a bag to biodegrade which has the following effects:

  • Approximately 100,000 sea turtles and other marine animals die every year because they get strangled in bags or mistake them for food.

  • In South Africa only 16% of plastic gets recycled, the rest end up in landfills, and ultimately, many end up in the ocean.

  • With approximately 9.1 million dogs and 2.4 million pet cats in South Africa, an immense quantity of pet poop is generated everyday. Many pet owners use their used plastic shopping bags, which are usually not environmentally friendly, to pick up and dispose of their pets' poop.

In addition to the Environmental hazard of plastic, pet poop also pollutes our underground water. There is 23 million bacteria in dog poop.

Pet Owners often mistakenly believe that leaving dog waste to decompose in the garden is good for the lawn.

  • Pet poop is acidic and therefore harmful to your grass.

  • Pet poop destroys your grass because of the microbiome it contains.

  • Pet poop should not be used in compost for vegetable gardens because, unlike cow manure which is mostly composted grass, it will contaminate your vegetables with dangerous bacteria.

  • Many illnesses and infectious organisms are found in pet poo! For example:

 Salmonella

 E. coli

 Giardia

 Leptospira

 Parvovirus

 Coliform bacteria
